Cost

The cost of racing varies, but include race fees, and if out-of-town travel is required, transportation, lodging, and meals.

Fees for OC6 races our club has attended in the past have run $300-$390 for registration and an additional fee for boat rental since we lack a trailer to bring one of our own. At Brigantine in 2022, the cost of the boat rental was $155. Team members split the cost of registration and rental. For races requiring boat rental , it is important to register a team early to confirm the rental.

Transportation and lodging costs for races have varied depending on the race location as well as team members’ preferences and schedules. But generally our teams have carpooled and shared hotel suites or AirBnB rentals to reduce costs. Our teams usually eat together when traveling, but costs vary based on individual choice and preference. Most races provide a light breakfast and coffee. Some races also arrange a luau or similar group meal during the day. While some organizers – Toronto, for instance – included the meal in the race fee, others require tickets at additional cost.

The Manhattan circumnavigation is a fundraiser for Ke Aloha Outrigger in Hoboken, NJ and not a race. Instead of a registration fee, they ask each person in the boat to do their best to raise $250, either through direct payment, donations (from others), or some combination of the two. Lodging in the New York metro area is expensive, but the last few years, we’ve been able to make arrangements to accommodate members.

Who will be chosen to participate? 

Race crew selection will be made by the coach. Priority will be given to club members that regularly attend practices and are eager and willing to learn. Club members who rarely attend practice will not be prioritized no matter how elite they may be, except in cases where there is not enough interest to fill a boat for a race.

For Brigantine, because conditions could potentially be dangerous, the coach will try to pick the most able crew available at the time. If we’re lucky, we can enter two boats. Those that didn’t get picked for Brigantine will have priority at the Toronto race and other fall races. All racers need to have some confidence that the coach isn’t picking personal favorites and will try hard to include all able racers.
